In society, we have created this aspiration in life called The American Dream. With that, comes many different perspectives. Some believe that everyone has an equal opportunity to be successful and have a happy lifestyle with hard work, however, other believe that this dream is nearly dead. Author of many popular books, John Green, mocks this idea implying that the American Dream is a joke. He uses hyperbole and satire to express his opinion.
Green creates a humorous tone with his audience, and in this case, is lady and gentleman. He uses satire when he says his parents left Korea with nothing but the clothes on their backs. He also makes a joke on how his parents sacrificed so much, only for their son to lose his virginity to a cheerleader in a waffle house bathroom. Metaphorically, I think he’s trying to say that people who travel to have a “better life”, came for nothing.
