What is indifference? Indifference is the lack of interest, concern, or sympathy. Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor, uses these contractions to explain how there are two sides to thing, and how it's not one or the other that are opposites. He believes that people nowadays are overall indifferent. That we don't care and are just oblivious to the important things and that we don't make an effort to do anything. For example, the Jews during the Holocaust. Why didn't anyone bother to unite and act on it and save millions from dying? Instead, we as a country just let it happen in a blink of an eye. He uses epistrophe to get his point across.
Elie Weisel uses epistrophe to emphasize how he feels about indifference. He creates a pattern by adding this word to every end of a sentence because that's where it has the most effect on the audience. When he suggests that the opposite of life is not death, but that they are only indifferent. By this, he means that the opposite of life is actually not doing anything about life. Instead, it would be sitting around and letting things pass by without acknowledging or being active.
