James Baldwin explains that he isn't interested in anyone's guilt. He believe's that America has been wasting a lot of time focusing on past evens rather than focusing on the now. But because we are citizens, we are responsible for the things that happen in the future. The author uses rhetorical devices such as syntax to explain his assertion.
The author uses syntax to assert that no one should feel guilty for the things that they weren't able to control. By saying "... I know you didn't do it, and I didn't do it either..." he equals himself with another person. He ends it with saying that even though it (the situation) had nothing to do with either person, they are still considered responsible for it because the past follows them around.
